The SerenityShares Impact Index Methodology TM
The SerenityShares Impact Index employs a passive methodology designed to measure the performance of a diversified portfolio of U.S.-listed companies that operates in areas that address a variety of societal, social, and environmental challenges.
Instead of assigning scores to individual companies based on what can be subjective metrics, the SerenityShres Impact Index takes a top-down approach similar to that defined by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Whereas the SDGs include laudable challenges such as “no poverty” and “zero hunger”, SerenityShares designed its methodology to produce a benchmark that could target solutions using public equities.
The Index focuses on identifying what people perceive makes the world a better place to live in…the products and services that serve the common good and which improve society as a whole and the planet on which we live. The result is the identification of the following 6 pillars and 20 themes.
Underlying each theme is a detailed definition to identify individual companies whose products and services target one of the aforementioned 20 themes. For example, the definition of renewable energy production is:
Energy usage in developing and emerging nations continues to rise and we are increasingly aware of the impact of fossil fuels on the environment, the damage they cause to our air and water, and their relationship to global warming. New sources of cleaner energy are required to meet the needs of the planet today and in the future. Products, services, infrastructure, and technologies supporting the development or delivery of renewable energy and alternative fuels include the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity from solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, waste energy, wave tidal, hydrogen, fuel cells, biodiesel, etc.
The Resultant Portfolio
Beginning with a universe of all 6500+ firms listed on the NYSE and NASDAQ stock exchanges, the SerenityShares process results in the identification of 100+ companies that produce products or services that address at least one of the 20 societal, social, or environmental challenges we identified.
